HPV scientists to be honored

The Inspiration Award honors individuals who offer hope to people with cancer. Previous honorees include the late James P. The award is presented at the Discovery Ball, the premier gala in Rochester. Tim and Terri Wilmot, longtime supporters of the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center, are chairs for this year’s event, which will be attended by more than 1,200 people.


“We’re proud to see our local researchers’ findings have such a dramatic impact on cancer,â€? said Tim Wilmot . “We expect to see more advances like this come from Wilmot scientists as this center grows.â€?


Infectious disease experts Reichman, Rose and Bonnez discovered the key component of the new vaccine, which prevents infection with the HPV virus, known to cause most cervical cancers. The virologists were trying to create a blood test to detect HPV infection, which is spread through sexual contact.


Years of study resulted in their discovery of virus-like particles, which look like the HPV virus and cause the body’s immune system to fight infection. The technology was sold to pharmaceutical companies that developed the vaccine, which has shown 100 percent effectiveness in clinical trials in Rochester a decade ago.

Nathan D. Lambert, M.D., one of the Wake Forest Baptist researchers, said, “We thought it was important to look at this because moderate kidney disease is far more prevalent - 16 million people have it - versus the 340,000 people who have been diagnosed with stage 5 or end-stage CKD.”


The study also looked at the presence of protein in the urine, common with diabetic patients and often a marker of kidney dysfunction. The presence of both moderate kidney disease and proteinuria predicted a higher rate of cardiovascular events, specifically stent thrombosis.


This study highlights the importance of being aware of the cardiovascular risks to these patients, Lambert said, particularly since stent thrombosis is associated with bad outcomes. Additional cardiac risk factors for many of these patients can be high blood pressure, diabetes, family history, and high cholesterol.


“We need to discuss what we can do differently or better for these patients with moderate kidney disease,” Lambert said. “Presumably they might benefit from different therapies. They may need a more potent or longer dose of antiplatelet drugs. This also means more vigilance with the patient who has moderate kidney disease. We want to make sure they are followed closely and are compliant with their medication.”

The FDA says the symptoms of salmonella include fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps and any such illnesses should be reported to state or local health authorities.


This latest outbreak follows major food-borne illness scares in 2006 involving spinach, tomatoes and iceberg lettuce.


Experts say as salmonella is a very prevalent organism, such outbreaks are not unusual.

ConAgra has also recalled more than 400,000 pounds of pasta and meatball meals that they believe may have been under processed.
